Membership types and dues rates have been posted

Membership types and dues rates have been posted at http://www.hfac.com/memberships.html and can be found at the bottom of this post.  If you want more information on how these were created, please read on.

Hawthorn Farm Athletic Club is strongly committed to transparency and fair dealings.  That’s why the dues are now and will remain posted online and offered equally to everyone.  These rates were carefully crafted, looking at area demographics, industry information, ownership’s dues history from the Club we operated at Hawthorn Farm through 2012, and the more than 270 survey responses we received this month reporting dues that were being paid to Hawthorn Sport & Spa before their February closure.

There was a lot of variability in dues rates and fees in the survey responses, and our new rates hit the average. This means some people will find a dues reduction at the new club, and some people will find the prices are higher.

We have heard the feedback about lower cost Hillsboro competitors, and the higher end alternatives that are a bit further away.  Hawthorn Farm Athletic Club’s business plan is a long-term health strategy to earn your membership through a high quality, community-based experience.  We offer quality service from caring professionals, quality programming for all ages, and quality amenities that add to your overall Club experience.

Hawthorn Farm Athletic Club will charge a joining fee, and all memberships will be month-to-month.  There won’t be annual renewal fees or hidden membership charges.   The joining fee will be waived for anyone who can show they paid February dues to Hawthorn Sport & Spa.  We invite any former member of the Hawthorn Farm location to come in and speak with us about joining fees once we open at 8am on Thursday, April 2nd.

Membership types were also carefully considered.  Based on community input, we did away with the traditional “family” membership and instead allow either individual members or couple members to add their dependent children under the age of 23 to their account.  We are offering a mature adult membership type for those age 65 and older.  Again, our commitment to transparent, fair policies means membership policies will be open and equally offered.

As a new business, we do not have in place any corporate agreements with local businesses.  This membership type will be investigated once the club is up and running, but is not currently available.

Our first email will be sent today (Friday, March 27th) to anyone who submitted an email address to our new business.  If you would like to add your email address to our contact list, please submit it here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6J2ZCNL

Early next week we plan to post and email the member enrollment form along with clear instructions in order to make joining our new club as easy as possible.   We hope to see you next Thursday and beyond!

  1. What documentation would you like to see from people who paid dues in February? Just a credit card statement showing the charge?

    • At the moment, we’re committed to waiving joining fees for ANY former Hawthorn Farm member from April 2nd through the end of May. We invite you to come on in and speak with our team members to discuss your situation.

  2. Super disappointed in the membership dues especially for the members that have been so dedicated for so many years through all the ups and downs. Sad to say after 10 years we will no longer be going there since there is such a price increase. We could go to villa for that price.
Yes, it looks like you are making progress toward bettering the facility, but to charge that much for a soft opening with all the amenities not up to par or opened is kinda of ridiculous. We were hoping you would entice the former members back, but from what I have heard many will not return for that price.

    • Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry you are feeling disappointed.

From what was reported to us, Villa Sport is $225 joining and $108 a month for individuals compared to $199 joining (without prior membership) and $78 a month for individuals at HFAC. Villa Sport is $325 joining and $173 a month for couples, compared to $299 joining (without prior membership) and $112 a month for couples at HFAC.

HFAC also has a mature adult membership type, and the ability to add all dependent children to an individual or couple account. Our new club is offering month-to-month dues that were set at or just a few dollars more than what members were paying with an annual membership requirement in 2012. The new rate is actually less than what many members were paying to Sport & Spa when they closed.

It is true that we are not opening the club with any corporate accounts in place and that we have standardized pricing so we are not offering any special deals that aren’t available to everyone. Our approach is one of transparency and long-term business health so we can offer the best staff and amenities in the area.

I hope you consider coming into the club, meeting the team members, and checking out the work being done in person. We will be offering a “soft-opening” pricing consideration that will be shared at opening.

      • “Soft opening pricing consideration” means that there will be an offer or “discount” during the soft opening period but I did not post the specific offer on the blog because I do not have the official language or details of that offer. We don’t want anyone misinformed – we’re about transparent, open communications. The spirit of the offer is in place but the structure of the offer depends on behind the scenes logistics of billing and software, all of which are coming together quickly. The details will be available by 8am Thursday morning when we open the doors!

  3. Does HFAC have any policies discouraging inappropriate relationship/extramarital affairs between its employees and married club members?

This was a real issue under the previous management. Will the new management have a more family oriented focus and rules or is infidelity by staff accepted as an unfortunately reality in a health club?

    • I can’t speak to this type of specific employee policy at this time. I can tell you that HFAC is a local-family owned small business with a single location. Our hands-on management team is highly experienced. We are strongly committed to good operating policies that make the club a positive place for all involved.

  4. I am also disappointed in the new rates. I have also been a member for over 10 years and the current prices for an individual are too high to justify my returning to the club. Although I haven’t toured Villa Sport, from what I have read of their amenities and facilities I don’t think that was the comparison that the new owners should have used to justify the new rates. I would certainly agree that Hawthorn Farm is worth more than LA Fitness, but the new rates were surprising given that the new owners appear to be very motivated to get the club back to functioning as it was when I first joined. It’s hard to believe that a gym with a troubled history like this one will attract enough people to be profitable by charging those rates.

    • Hi Donna,

Thanks for your feedback on the dues rates. As the owners, we are absolutely motivated to get the new club functioning even better than it was in 2005! The new club’s dues rates are comparable to the former HFAC’s 2005 rates despite 10 years passing. They are set at a level necessary to offer the quality of employees, amenities, programming and member experience we have promised. The information on Villa Sport was only in direct response to the commenters statement “I could go to Villa for that price”. For detailed information on how we determined our pricing, please see the original blog post.

      • I was able to pull out some old data. As just a quick comparison, monthly dues at the former HFAC in 2006 were $76 for an individual and $111 for a couple with a 12-month agreement. The new club is opening in 2015 with month-to-month memberships at $78 for an individual and $112 for a couple.

  5. HFAC is a heckuva nice facility right here in Hillsboro. I’m excited that the original owners are willing to step up and get it back to where it belongs. With loyal membership we might even have our own MAC!

As far as the dues question…I think the new payment structure is just fine, and i appreciate the fact that the original — and now present — owners are avoiding the shady financial tactics practiced by less reputable clubs.

Linda and I are sticking with HFAC.

Thanks, Heidi, for your hard work and devotion to fairness and transparency!

  6. We were paying $111 before for a couples membership. So the new $112 is no problem and not sure where the rate increase others are mentioning is coming from. I also appreciate that there will be no sign up fee for former members.

HFAC is doing things correctly. Fingers crossed you continue to do so and are able to make a viable business out of it. But, with all respect, this is a last chance.

    See you Thursday.

  7. We were members for 10 years, but with the $16 increase to our family rate per month, at the present time we will not be rejoining. I am assuming the rate difference reflects the corporate (Intel) discount we were receiving. I am also have a huge concern with the requirement for EFT vs. using a credit card. I am not comfortable with a company having direct access to my bank account. I am on a board of a local not for profit and we understand that we need to accept credit card charges as part of the costs of doing business these days. Please reconsider this policy. In my opinion, you need to rebuild trusted relationships with your customers and quickly reinstating the corporate discounts you had in place and offering a safer form of monthly payment would be a step in the right direction. I would also like to see you continue to offer a one time $5.00 pass for kids. The jump to $15.00 is way too high. It was a really nice to be for my kids to once in a while bring a friend along for a reasonable rate. No way would I pay $15.00 to do this. I am hoping that you will change these policies before the end of May (when you reinstate the initiation fees). If not, more than likely you have definitely lost another former loyal customer.
